Lawmaker Rumeen Farhana has raised serious concerns in Parliament over the deteriorating condition of healthcare services in her constituency, describing a government hospital in Sarail Upazila of Brahmanbaria as “a patient itself.”
Speaking during a session on Thursday, the MP highlighted the immense pressure on the lone healthcare facility, which serves a population of nearly 3,50,000 people across nine unions in the upazila. Despite this large catchment area, the hospital has only 50 beds, making it severely inadequate to meet the growing demand for medical care.
Rumeen Farhana pointed out that the hospital is grappling with multiple challenges, including an acute shortage of doctors, nurses and other essential staff.
She said patients often face difficulties due to the limited availability of medicines, while the absence of modern medical equipment further hampers proper diagnosis and treatment.
The MP also drew attention to the stalled development project aimed at improving the facility.
According to her, a plan to construct a new building at an estimated cost of Tk10 crore had been initiated to expand services. However, the project came to a halt after the contractor reportedly fled away after 5 August in 2024, leaving the structure incomplete.
As a result, healthcare services are currently being managed from an old two-storey building, which she said is ill-equipped to handle the patient load.
Rumeen Farhana urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to complete the project and strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the area to ensure better services for the people.
