Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday afternoon conferred the “Independence Award 2026,” Bangladesh’s highest state honour, recognising outstanding contributions across different fields at the national level.

The award ceremony was held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital and began with a recitation from the Holy Quran. A total of 15 distinguished individuals and five institutions were honoured this year for their significant contributions to the nation.

Among the recipients, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was honoured posthumously for her role in independence, democracy, women’s education and nation-building. On behalf of Khaleda Zia, her granddaughter Barrister Zaima Rahman received the award from the Prime Minister.

Other honourees included Major Mohammad Abdul Jalil (posthumous) for his role in the Liberation War, Prof Zahurul Karim for science and technology, Ashraf Siddiqui (posthumous) for literature, Hanif Sanket for contributions to television and culture, and Bashir Ahmed (posthumous) in music.

In sports, table tennis icon Zobera Rahman (Linu) was recognised, while Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury (posthumous), Md Saidul Haque, and Maherin Chowdhury (posthumous) received awards in social service. Kazi Fazlur Rahman (posthumous) was honoured in public administration.

In research and education, Mohammad Abdul Baki, Professor MA Rahim, and Prof Dr Sukomal Barua were recognised, while Abdul Muqit Majumder (Babu) received the award for environmental conservation.

Five institutions - Faujdarhat Cadet College, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation, SOS Children's Village International, and Gonoshasthaya Kendra – were also honoured this year.

The Independence Award, the highest civilian honour in Bangladesh, is awarded annually in recognition of exceptional contributions to the Liberation War, independence, and national development. It has been presented since 1977 ahead of Independence Day.

Each recipient receives Tk5 lakh, an 18-carat 50-gram gold medal, a replica of the medal, and a certificate of honour.
