Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said the government is working on introducing a retirement allowance for senior journalists to enhance their financial security.

He made the statement on Saturday while visiting ailing journalist Ismail Hossain Negaban at Bangladesh Medical University.

The minister noted that although the media is widely regarded as a key pillar of democracy, many journalists continue to work without sufficient institutional safeguards and face uncertainty, particularly in later life.

He said the lack of financial protection for veteran journalists has long been overlooked, prompting the government to take steps toward introducing retirement benefits.

Highlighting the importance of the profession, he said journalism remains a respected field, yet many experienced journalists struggle financially in their later years. The government aims to ensure they can live with dignity after retirement, he added.

Swapon also said efforts are underway to strengthen policies that uphold both media freedom and accountability, alongside enhancing the role of the Journalists Welfare Trust.

He stressed that providing support and a secure working environment is essential to retain skilled professionals in the media sector, adding that the government remains committed to improving conditions for journalists.

During the visit, the minister handed over Tk1 lakh in financial assistance to Ismail Hossain Negaban on behalf of the Journalists Welfare Trust.

Managing Director Bashir Jamal and trustee board member Khondkar Kawser Hossain were also present at the time.
