A high-level meeting of the national water management committee was held on Sunday at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair, focusing on preparedness ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
The meeting took place at the Cabinet Division office in the Secretariat in the afternoon, according to Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman.
Key officials and experts attended the session, including Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, State Minister Forhad Hossain Azad, and noted water resource expert Professor Ainun Nishat, along with senior officials from the relevant ministry.
Officials said the discussion mainly centred on flood preparedness, drainage management, and ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing seasonal waterlogging across vulnerable regions of the country.
After the meeting, Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee briefed journalists, saying that the government has started advance preparations as the rainy season approaches, when flooding and inundation are common challenges in several parts of the country.
He said the committee reviewed ongoing projects and discussed additional steps needed to strengthen flood control measures and improve water flow management before the monsoon intensifies.
The minister also highlighted that the country’s canal excavation programme is continuing as part of long-term efforts to improve drainage capacity and agricultural water management.
He informed that the Prime Minister is scheduled to formally inaugurate canal re-excavation works in Jashore on 27 April, followed by another inauguration programme in Sylhet on 2 May.
Officials added that these initiatives are aimed at improving irrigation facilities, reducing waterlogging, and enhancing resilience against seasonal floods through improved water infrastructure and coordinated planning.
