Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday distributed “Family Cards” among 911 beneficiaries in Bogura as part of a social protection initiative aimed at improving living standards and empowering women-headed households.

The distribution programme was held at the Shaheed Zia Degree College ground in Bagbari area of Gabtali Upazila in the afternoon, where local residents, party supporters, and officials gathered in large numbers to witness the event.

During the ceremony, the party anthem “Prothom Bangladesh Amar, Shesh Bangladesh” was played, and the Prime Minister, along with his wife Zubaida Rahman, stood and joined in the singing.

Senior leaders, including Social Welfare Minister AZM Zahid Hossain, also participated, along with other party activists and supporters present at the venue.

According to officials, the Family Card initiative is part of the government’s broader election pledge to enhance social welfare and strengthen economic support for vulnerable families, particularly women-headed households.

The programme was initially launched in Dhaka on 10 March as a pilot project.

Under the current phase, a total of 37,567 female-headed families across 14 upazilas will receive support by June. Each selected household will receive Tk2,500 per month through the programme.

Authorities said the card will be issued in the name of the mother or female head of the family to ensure targeted assistance and greater transparency in distribution.

Government representatives said the initiative is designed to strengthen household-level financial security while also promoting women’s empowerment at the grassroots level.

Officials further noted that the Family Card will gradually evolve into a universal social identification system by 2030, integrating social welfare services under a single digital framework.

The event drew significant public attention, with many local residents attending from early morning. Security personnel were deployed to manage the large gathering and ensure smooth proceedings during the distribution programme.

Authorities described the Bogura event as part of a wider effort to expand social safety net coverage and improve living standards for low-income families across the country.
