National Citizen Party (NCP) lawmaker Abdul Hannan Masud on Monday raised serious concerns in Parliament over threats to his personal safety, claiming repeated intimidation and attacks in his constituency of Hatiya (Noakhali-6).

Speaking during a parliamentary session on a notice related to MPs’ privileges, he said he narrowly escaped a possible attack while returning from Hatiya just two days earlier.

He urged the government to ensure his security and take immediate action against those involved.

Although Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal did not formally admit the notice due to procedural limitations under parliamentary rules, he read it aloud in the House and directed the home minister to look into the matter urgently.

Hannan Masud described Hatiya as a difficult and volatile constituency, alleging that land grabbers and armed groups operate there with influence.

He claimed that he has faced at least five direct attacks both before and after the election period.

He also alleged that a local imam was assaulted after offering prayers for him at a mosque and has been undergoing medical treatment for over a month.

The MP further said that despite video evidence showing armed attackers, no meaningful action has been taken against them.

He added that he regularly receives death threats through social media platforms, including Facebook Live broadcasts, and often faces obstruction when attempting to enter his constituency.

“If an elected MP and his supporters are not safe, what will happen to ordinary citizens?” he questioned in Parliament.

Hannan also claimed that his official vehicle still bears marks from previous attacks and alleged that some identified attackers, including individuals accused of assaulting a state media journalist, remain free.

He called for a parliamentary investigation into the incidents and demanded strong state intervention to ensure safety for himself and his supporters.

Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal termed the allegations “serious and unacceptable,” while noting that procedural rules prevented formal acceptance of the notice. He urged the home minister, who was present in the House, to take swift legal action.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed responded that the allegations are being taken seriously and assured that appropriate steps would follow if verified.

He advised the lawmaker to file a general diary or case with the police and said the government remains committed to upholding the rule of law.
