A Sirajganj court has issued an arrest warrant against Kushtia-3 (sadar) lawmaker Amir Hamza in connection with a defamation case over remarks made about Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.

Sirajganj Chauhali Amli Court Judge Suman Bhuiya issued the order at around 11:45 am on Tuesday after the lawmaker failed to respond to a previously issued summons.

The case was filed on 2 April by Sirajganj District Bar Association General Secretary Advocate Humayun Kabir. He accused Amir Hamza of making derogatory comments about the energy minister during a discussion held on 27 March at a mosque in Kushtia Sadar ahead of Friday prayers.

According to the complaint, a video clip of the remarks later circulated on social media and was subsequently reported by several media outlets. This prompted legal action, with the plaintiff alleging that the comments damaged the minister’s reputation.

The case was filed under sections 296, 500 and 504 of the Penal Code.

In a separate development, another defamation case seeking Tk 100 crore in damages was filed against Amir Hamza at Sirajganj Sadar Amli Court on 30 March by Advocate SM Nazmul Islam.
