Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has called for a structured roadmap with technical support from UNESCO to address the growing challenge of misinformation and disinformation.
He made the request on Wednesday during a meeting with UNESCO Country Representative to Bangladesh, Dr Susan Vize, at the secretariat in Dhaka.
During the meeting, Dr Susan Vize outlined UNESCO’s ongoing work in Bangladesh, including efforts to strengthen media development and policy frameworks. She also highlighted the organisation’s global initiatives to combat misinformation, which she described as a major and growing concern.
She said UNESCO is placing particular emphasis on fact-checking as a key tool to counter false narratives. As part of this effort, university students in Bangladesh are being trained in information verification techniques.
Zahir Uddin Swapon welcomed the initiative and said there is considerable scope to expand cooperation between the government and UNESCO in the media sector. He stressed the importance of using UNESCO’s expertise to improve transparency and credibility in the digital information environment.
The UNESCO representative assured full support for these efforts.
State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yeaser Khan Choudhury and Information Secretary Mahbuba Farjana were also present at the meeting.
