The government has taken an initiative to provide jute-made school bags and uniforms to primary school students across Bangladesh, starting with a pilot programme at the upazila level.

The decision came at a high-level meeting held at the Cabinet Division in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Representatives from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, and the Local Government Division attended the meeting.

According to officials, the programme will initially be launched in two primary schools in each upazila. Local administrations will be responsible for selecting the institutions for the pilot phase.

Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin said the distribution is expected to begin in July. In the first month, around 1 lakh students will receive jute bags and school uniforms free of cost. The coverage will be expanded gradually to include all primary-level students nationwide.

Officials said the initiative is part of a broader effort to promote locally produced goods and support the country’s jute sector. At the same time, it aims to reduce the use of non-biodegradable materials and contribute to environmental protection.

The programme is also intended to ensure a sense of equality among students by standardising basic school items such as bags and uniforms, regardless of their socio-economic background.

Authorities believe the move will not only benefit students and families but also provide a boost to the domestic jute industry while reinforcing the use of eco-friendly products in everyday life.
