In response to the recent rise in fuel prices, the government has introduced a new fare structure for bus services across Bangladesh, slightly increasing travel costs for passengers.

The fare adjustment was finalised during a meeting held on Thursday, confirmed Road Transport Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam.

He said that under the revised rates, bus fares have been raised by 11 paisa per kilometre in both Dhaka and Chattogram, with the same increase applied to inter-district routes. In the two major cities, the fare for buses and minibuses has gone up from Tk2.42 to Tk2.53 per kilometre. Meanwhile, long-distance bus services now charge Tk2.23 per kilometre, up from the previous Tk2.12.

The decision followed detailed discussions between government officials and key stakeholders in the transport sector.

The meeting took place at the Secretariat, where representatives from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), along with transport owners and workers, participated in negotiations over the proposed fare revision.

Officials revealed that transport owners had initially pushed for a larger increase of 22 paisa per kilometre. However, after deliberation and consideration of public impact, authorities opted for a more moderate adjustment.

The revised fare structure is expected to take effect immediately, aiming to balance the financial pressures on transport operators while keeping fare increases manageable for commuters.
