Bangladesh has secured the adoption of a resolution on sustainable bioeconomy at the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok.

The resolution, titled “Supporting the Transition towards a Sustainable Bioeconomy in Asia and the Pacific", was adopted unanimously by member states on Friday. The initiative was led by Bangladesh under the leadership of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam.

According to an official message received on Saturday, the move highlights Bangladesh’s growing role in shaping the regional development agenda. The resolution aligns with the country’s national priorities of achieving sustainable, innovation-driven and inclusive economic growth.

It emphasises economic transformation through the circular economy, efficient resource use, and the application of science and technology. It also calls for stronger regional cooperation across the Asia-Pacific to promote knowledge exchange, capacity building, investment, and the development of sustainable bioeconomy value chains.

Speaking at the session, Faqir Mahbub Anam said the bioeconomy was “not just a new concept” but an effective approach to tackling climate challenges, improving resilience, and ensuring inclusive growth.

The resolution was co-sponsored by several countries, including India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Mongolia, Armenia and Kazakhstan, reflecting broad regional support.

The session also adopted the Baku-Bangkok Declaration on “Strengthening Social Development to Build Inclusive Societies for All Ages”, reaffirming a shared commitment to inclusive and sustainable social development across the region.
