A Cumilla court on Saturday sent retired army man Hafizur Rahman, an accused in the Tonu murder case, to jail after the completion of his three-day remand.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Abdullah Aman issued the order after the Investigation Officer, Sub-Inspector Tarikul Islam, produced the accused before the court following the end of the remand period.

Investigation Officer Tarikul Islam confirmed that Hafizur Rahman was brought before the court after his remand expired.

He also said that there had been no new developments regarding additional arrests in the case so far.

According to him, the investigation is ongoing, and the process of DNA cross-matching is currently being carried out as part of the forensic examination.

Earlier on Wednesday, the same court had granted a three-day remand for Hafizur Rahman, who is identified as one of the three suspects in the murder case.

Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a history student at Cumilla Victoria Government College, was raped and murdered inside Cumilla Cantonment on 20 March 2016.

The case has remained under close public and investigative scrutiny since it was filed, with authorities continuing to collect evidence and examine multiple leads. However, investigators have yet to confirm any further arrests or major breakthroughs.
