The government has demanded a fair and thorough investigation into the killing of two Bangladeshi PhD students in the US state of Florida, urging that those responsible be brought to justice.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangladesh said it is maintaining regular contact with the families of the victims as diplomatic efforts continue.

Speaking at a briefing in the capital on Sunday, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam called for a proper investigation into the incident, describing the killing as brutal and unacceptable.

She said Bangladesh expects full cooperation from US authorities in ensuring justice for the victims.

The state minister also briefed reporters on her recent participation in an international forum in Dakar of Senegal, noting that the visit helped strengthen Bangladesh’s diplomatic engagement with African countries.

She said discussions were held on potential fuel oil imports from African nations, adding that cooperation and communication with the region are expected to expand further in the coming days.

Shama Obaed emphasised that Africa remains an important region for Bangladesh in terms of foreign policy and economic cooperation.

On maritime issues, she said Bangladeshi vessels, including MV Joyjatra, are expected to safely navigate through the Strait of Hormuz despite ongoing regional tensions.

Officials said the government is closely monitoring developments related to the case and remains in contact with relevant international authorities.
