A debate over alleged corruption within the interim government led to a tense exchange in Parliament on Tuesday, as State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam raised concerns that were swiftly challenged by opposition leaders.
Speaking during the motion of thanks on the President’s address, Shama Obaed said that although the July Uprising reflected the patriotism of the younger generation, allegations of corruption had surfaced against some young members of the interim administration formed after 5 August 2024.
She also argued that if questions are raised about the legality of the President or his speech, similar doubts could be extended to the interim government itself.
Emphasising the broader role of politics, she said governance should not be shaped by social media trends alone and highlighted the need for experience, courage, and sound judgment. “Politics cannot rely on viral posts, online campaigns, or insults,” she said, adding that traditional political engagement remains essential.
She also underlined the importance of unity and avoiding divisive rhetoric, noting that Parliament could serve as a platform for meaningful national progress.
In response, Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam strongly objected to the remarks and demanded evidence to support the allegations. He pointed out that he had served as an adviser in the interim government and resigned before the election, asking where exactly he had been involved in corruption.
“Since this claim has been made in Parliament, proof must be presented,” the NCP leader said.
Later on, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad clarified that the state minister had not mentioned any individual by name in her speech, seeking to ease tensions following the exchange.
The discussion highlighted ongoing political sensitivities surrounding the interim government and underscored the importance of accountability and constructive debate within the legislature.
