State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain on Wednesday cautioned the opposition against attempts to destabilise the government, warning that such moves could ultimately backfire on them.
He made the remarks while taking part in the discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s speech during the 24th sitting of the first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad. The session was chaired by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal.
The state minister said the current government is rooted in a clear public mandate, distancing it from what he described as controversial elections of the past. He stressed that the administration remains firm and would not bow to any form of pressure.
Addressing the House, Ishraque said the ruling party is prepared to defend the government both politically and, on the streets, if necessary, recalling their past movements to establish voting rights and remove the previous regime.
He also criticised the opposition for what he termed a contradictory stance - engaging in constructive debate inside parliament while making inflammatory remarks outside.
According to him, such rhetoric is contributing to tensions in educational institutions and fuelling clashes among student groups.
Referring to recent developments, the state minister said that although the opposition leader had initially welcomed the formation of a committee to address the energy crisis, some opposition figures later made statements that could incite unrest, including threats to remove the government within a short timeframe.
Calling for unity, Ishraque urged all political forces to avoid divisive politics and instead work towards stability and peace. He warned that creating instability could benefit forces opposed to democratic progress.
He also recalled the sacrifices made during the 2024 mass movement and said political actors should remain respectful in honour of those who lost their lives.
The state minister further cautioned that any return of destabilising elements to power could have serious consequences for those currently involved in political movements.
