President Mohammed Shahabuddin has pledged to ensure fair rights, dignity, and safe working conditions for the nation's workforce, describing them as the "principal architects" of the country's development.
Speaking at an event marking May Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day 2026 in Dhaka, President Mohammed Shahabuddin paid tribute to the historical sacrifices of the labour movement. The President noted that the tireless contributions of workers across industry, agriculture, and construction remain the driving force of the national economy.
The President highlighted that the government is currently implementing various programmes to enhance welfare, including initiatives to reopen industries and revive jute mills. President Mohammed Shahabuddin also underscored the importance of the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Act, 2026, and the ratification of several International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions as key steps in reinforcing legal protections for the workforce.
Addressing workplace culture, President Mohammed Shahabuddin called for mutual trust between employers and employees to ensure sustainable industrial growth. The President specifically emphasised the rights of women workers, urging stakeholders to guarantee equal wages and safer environments while calling for stronger inspection mechanisms to prevent accidents.
The event, presided over by Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury, was attended by senior officials and international representatives, including ILO Bangladesh Country Director Max Tunon. President Mohammed Shahabuddin concluded by urging all parties to work together to build a just and inclusive state.
