Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday inaugurated a major project to enhance beautification and construction of flood protection infrastructure along both banks of the Surma River at Chandni Ghat area in Sylhet.
He laid the foundation stone of the project at Chandni Ghat at 11:00 am.
His spouse, Dr Zubaida Rahman, was present with him at that time.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Prime Minister’s Adviser Humaiun Kobir and Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury were present on the occasion.
During the event, officials concerned briefed the Prime Minister on the details of the project.
Prior to joining the foundation stone laying ceremony of the project, Tarique Rahman offered ziarat at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal on Saturday morning.
The Prime Minister offered fateha, recited Darood Sharif and prayed seeking peace for the country and the nation. His wife Dr Zubaida Rahman accompanied him there also.
Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury was also present on the occasion.
Ignoring the inclement weather, thousands of people gathered along the route to welcome the Prime Minister on his way to the shrine. Standing on both sides of the road, they greeted him warmly.
