Police have filed a charge sheet in a case over an alleged attempt to murder Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist Sheikh Mohammad Ashik during the July Mass Uprising, accusing 40 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Other notable accused in the case include former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former lawmaker Sadek Khan, and ward councillors Asif Ahammed and Tarekuzzaman Rajib.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution wing Deputy Police Commissioner Nasir Ahmed Hawalader said that the charge sheet was filed with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on 01 May.
“The court is scheduled to hold a hearing on taking the charge sheet into cognisance on 13 May,” he added.
According to the case statement, during the July uprising, protesters were staging a demonstration in the Mayur Villa area near Mohammadpur Bus Stand on 19 July 2024.
At around 2:45 pm, police allegedly attacked the demonstrators with batons and gunfire. Ashik was shot and fell on the road. The attackers, assuming him dead, left him lying there.
In connection with the incident, Ashik filed the case with the the Mohammadpur Police Station on 28 September, 2024. The case named 129 accused, including the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with 150 unidentified individuals.
