Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has introduced an automated system to detect and penalise traffic violations, warning that ignoring official notices may result in legal action, including arrest warrants.

The initiative was announced in a public notice issued on Sunday and signed by Acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar. It is part of broader efforts to reduce congestion, modernise traffic management, and enhance civic services in the capital.

Under the new system, traffic offences are being identified through CCTV footage and still images collected from surveillance cameras installed at key intersections and major roads. Authorities are targeting violations such as driving without registration or fitness certificates, illegal parking, lane obstruction, and other offences that disrupt traffic flow.

Once detected, notices are generated through an electronic traffic prosecution system and sent via registered mail to the vehicle owners or drivers concerned. Recipients are required to appear before the relevant traffic division or at DMP headquarters and settle fines under the Road Transport Act through banks or mobile financial services.

Police officials said failure to respond to these notices will trigger further legal proceedings. In such cases, metropolitan magistrates may issue summonses or even arrest warrants against the offenders.

DMP also urged the public to remain cautious about fraud, advising people not to make unofficial payments or share personal information outside the formal system. Anyone receiving suspicious messages related to traffic cases has been advised to contact the nearest police station.

The force said advanced CCTV and AI-enabled technologies are already being used to monitor and prosecute offences such as signal violations, wrong-side driving, illegal stopping and road obstruction.
