President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Sunday urged government officials to place public interest at the forefront while implementing state policies, development programmes and election pledges.

He made the remarks while addressing the Deputy Commissioners’ Conference 2026 at Bangabhaban, where he emphasised the crucial role of field-level administrators in ensuring that government services reach citizens effectively and on time.

Describing deputy commissioners as the government’s direct representatives at the grassroots, the President said they must remain attentive to people’s concerns and work proactively to resolve grievances.

He also highlighted the need to deliver quick, accessible and quality services by leveraging modern information technology.

Welcoming participants to the conference, Shahabuddin paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War and remembered key national leaders, including Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, for their contributions to the country’s democratic development.

He also honoured those who sacrificed their lives during the July-August 2024 Mass Uprising, noting that their efforts created an opportunity to build a more accountable and just state.

The President praised the role of field administration in conducting the recent national election in a peaceful and credible manner and described the DC Conference as a vital platform linking policy formulation with ground-level implementation.

Referring to global challenges, including the ongoing Middle East conflict, he warned of potential impacts on energy supply and commodity prices, urging officials to remain vigilant in managing these risks.

He further stressed the importance of transparency, accountability and strict anti-corruption measures, alongside ensuring law and order, preventing misinformation, and addressing key issues such as land disputes, service delivery, and violence against women and children.

The President expressed confidence that the dedication and professionalism of government officials would help advance national development and strengthen a people-oriented governance system.
