BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday expressed optimism that newly elected members from women’s reserved seats will contribute meaningfully to the functioning of the Jatiya Sangsad.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after paying tribute to BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at their graves in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.

Newly elected MPs from reserved seats of the ruling alliance joined him during the tribute programme, where Fateha was offered.

Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni was also present at the event.

Mirza Fakhrul said he expects the women MPs to carry out their responsibilities properly and help strengthen democratic institutions through active participation in parliamentary proceedings.

He added that their role would be important in making Parliament more effective.

Earlier in the day, around 1pm, Mirza Fakhrul led the newly elected women MPs in placing wreaths at Ziaur Rahman’s grave.

After the tribute, BNP MP Arifa Sultana Ruma said she is committed to working for women across the country, particularly those who are poor, vulnerable and deprived. A lawyer by profession, she added that she intends to use her legal expertise to support citizens and dedicate herself to national service.

She also said she draws inspiration from the political ideals of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia, which she believes are being carried forward under the leadership of Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Arifa Sultana Ruma emphasised that national development is not possible without ensuring women’s participation and empowerment.

She also highlighted initiatives such as family cards aimed at strengthening women’s economic independence at the household level.

Out of the 50 reserved seats for women in Parliament, 36 have gone to the BNP alliance. The newly elected MPs were sworn in on Sunday night at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad administering the oath in the presence of senior party leaders.
