The High Court on Monday issued a rule asking government authorities to explain why 208 expatriates who participated in the July Uprising should not be provided Tk25 lakh each as compensation.

The individuals concerned were reportedly detained in several Arab countries after taking part in demonstrations in support of the student-led movement during July-August 2024. All of them have since been repatriated to Bangladesh.

The bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice AFM Saiful Karim issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed in this regard. The court also included the Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and other relevant officials as respondents.

The petition was filed by Barrister AHM Sanjid Siddiqui, seeking financial compensation for the expatriates involved in the movement.

The court order now requires the concerned government officials to respond and justify why such compensation should not be granted to the affected expatriates.

The case relates to allegations that the expatriates were detained abroad for their involvement in protests during the July-August 2024 student-led uprising, after which they were later brought back to Bangladesh.
