The government of Bangladesh has announced an ambitious plan to transform the Bogura Airfield into an international-standard airport while also establishing an air force base and a flying academy in the region.

The announcement was made on Thursday during a press briefing following a visit by senior ministers, state ministers and the Chief of Air Staff.

It was known that the initiative is being implemented under the directive of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, with the goal of developing Bogura as the first international aviation hub in northern Bangladesh.

The project is expected to focus on strengthening cargo transport facilities, particularly for agricultural products and light engineering goods, to support regional trade and export growth.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam, State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, State Minister for LGRD Mir Shahe Alam, and Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan were present during the site visit.

Speaking at the briefing, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam said the proposed international airport will feature a 10,500-foot runway, and a feasibility study for the project will begin soon.

He also assured those individuals affected by land acquisition for the airport and air force base will receive compensation at three times the market value of their property.

Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan said the government has already granted preliminary approval for the establishment of a modern air force base at the site.

He further added that the procurement process for new fighter aircraft has been initiated, and the aircraft are expected to be deployed at the proposed Bogura base once operational.

Officials believe the project will significantly enhance regional connectivity, strengthen national defence infrastructure and boost economic activity in northern Bangladesh.
