Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman held a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday, where they discussed a range of measures aimed at strengthening anti-corruption efforts and improving governance in the country.
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office at the Secretariat, according to Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.
Atikur Rahman Rumon said the discussion focused on ways to curb corruption, enhance institutional accountability, and reinforce good governance practices across state structures.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister reiterated his government’s firm stance against corruption and stressed the importance of maintaining transparency in public administration.
Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani was also present at the meeting.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Iftekharuzzaman said TIB placed several concrete recommendations before the Prime Minister, particularly regarding reforms in key institutions involved in accountability mechanisms.
He said special emphasis was given to restructuring the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to make it more independent and effective.
According to him, the Prime Minister responded positively to the proposals and assured that necessary steps would be considered for implementation.
The TIB chief also said discussions included Bangladesh’s potential role in hosting the 2028 International Anti-Corruption Conference. He noted that such an initiative would help strengthen Bangladesh’s global image in promoting transparency and accountability.
Iftekharuzzaman said the Prime Minister expressed agreement in principle, while noting that the proposal would proceed through appropriate government and cabinet-level approval processes.
He added that Bangladesh has the opportunity to position itself among select Asian countries that have previously hosted the global anti-corruption forum.
