Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasised the need for expanding the use of modern technologies in water and wastewater treatment as part of ensuring sustainable development in Bangladesh.
He made the remarks during a meeting held at the Secretariat on Thursday with Shailesh Kumar, chief executive officer of Chennai-based multinational water technology company VA Tech Wabag Limited. A press release from the ministry confirmed the details of the discussion.
During the meeting, the minister underlined that the government is placing strong importance on timely completion of development projects while ensuring that quality standards are properly maintained.
He said that efficient implementation is essential for achieving long-term benefits in the water management sector.
The discussions covered a wide range of issues related to water management in Bangladesh, including water purification processes and the need to ensure safe drinking water for the population. Both sides also exchanged views on how modern technological solutions can improve overall water quality and treatment efficiency.
A particular focus of the discussion was the condition of the Buriganga River, which has long been affected by pollution. The minister noted that the government is already taking initiatives aimed at reducing pollution in rivers across the country and improving their ecological condition.
Senior officials, including Local Government Division Secretary Shahidul Hasan and other ministry officials, were also present at the meeting. The discussions reflected ongoing efforts to integrate advanced water treatment solutions into national infrastructure planning.
