Two Bangladeshi nationals, including a college student, were killed in firing by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Dhajanagar border area in Kasba Upazila of Brahmanbaria late Friday night.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and family members of the deceased confirmed the matter on Saturday.
According to the BGB, the shooting incident reportedly occurred at around 11:15pm on Friday near the border area.
One of the deceased was identified as Md Morsalin, 22, a student of Shah Alam Degree College and son of Hebju Mia of Dhajanagar Batanbari Village under Gopinathpur Union in Kasba Upazila.
Family members said Morsalin was called out of his house by some local individuals before being taken towards the border area at night. They alleged that BSF personnel opened fire from the Indian side during border patrol activities, leaving him dead on the spot.
BSF members later took his body into Indian territory, the family added.
Border Guard Bangladesh, however, said the incident was linked to alleged smuggling activities along the border.
Lt Col SM Shariful Islam, commander of BGB-60 Battalion, stated that around 15 Bangladeshis had reportedly crossed into Indian territory through the Dhajanagar border to engage in smuggling with Indian associates.
According to BGB, BSF personnel from the Pathariadwar camp under the 49th Battalion attempted to stop the group while they were returning with goods, which led to a confrontation. During the incident, BSF members allegedly opened fire, killing Morsalin and injuring another Bangladeshi, who later died while receiving treatment at a hospital in India.
BGB officials said diplomatic communication is ongoing with BSF authorities to bring back the bodies. A protest note has already been sent, and preparations are underway for a flag meeting between the two border forces regarding the incident.
