Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday said that restoring public confidence in the police force and strengthening law and order remain the government’s top priority.
He made the remarks in a message issued on the occasion of National Police Week-2026, which begins on Sunday with a four-day programme across Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister said a professional, disciplined and responsible police force is essential for ensuring national stability and maintaining public trust.
He noted that Police Week serves as an important opportunity for members of the force to reaffirm their commitment to becoming a dependable service-oriented institution.
Tarique Rahman said the government is currently implementing an extensive programme aimed at building a prosperous, self-reliant and justice-based democratic state. However, he stressed that achieving these goals would not be possible without ensuring safety, security and a peaceful environment for citizens.
He acknowledged the crucial role of law enforcement agencies in safeguarding public life, noting that police have consistently performed their duties responsibly during various national challenges.
Referring to the recent general election, the Prime Minister said the performance of the police demonstrated their ability to work effectively in a supportive and conducive environment.
He also highlighted the contribution of Bangladesh Police in international peacekeeping missions, saying it has enhanced the country’s global reputation.
Tarique Rahman further said that after more than a decade and a half, a democratic government has been established through a free and fair election, bringing relief and stability to public life. He added that citizens now expect a society free from fear, enforced disappearances and criminal intimidation.
He urged the police to take stronger action against mob violence, youth gangs and drug-related crimes to ensure lasting stability and support democratic progress.
The Prime Minister extended greetings to all serving and retired members of the police force and wished success for the observance of Police Week-2026.
