Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir has said Bangladesh is committed to maintaining international relations based on mutual respect, balance, and the country’s national interests.
He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking as the chief guest at an event titled “Bangladesh First: Vision of Foreign Policy for a New Bangladesh” held at a hotel in Dhaka. The programme was organised by the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS).
Humaiun Kobir said the government’s foreign policy approach under the “Bangladesh First” framework will be multi-dimensional and flexible, rather than aligned with any single global power. He emphasised that Bangladesh will continue engaging constructively with all countries while maintaining strategic independence.
He noted that the global order is undergoing rapid transformation, with traditional power structures shifting and new geopolitical and economic realities emerging. In this context, he said, Bangladesh must adopt a pragmatic and balanced diplomatic strategy.
The adviser stressed that safeguarding sovereignty and ensuring independent decision-making will remain central to the government’s foreign policy priorities.
He also highlighted economic diplomacy as a key focus area, including expanding export markets, attracting diverse foreign investment, strengthening energy security, and enhancing regional trade and connectivity.
Humaiun Kobir said Bangladesh aims to position itself as a strategic economic bridge linking South Asia, Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
He also reiterated Bangladesh’s support for an inclusive and cooperative Indo-Pacific framework, stating that the country will not align with any bloc but will actively participate in trade, maritime security, connectivity and sustainable development initiatives.
On climate change, he said Bangladesh, being highly vulnerable, seeks to play a leading role in global climate diplomacy by advocating climate justice and fair financing mechanisms.
He further said that a nation’s global standing depends on its internal governance, democracy and rule of law, adding that the government is committed to ensuring accountability and strengthening democratic institutions.
BIPSS President Major General ANM Muniruzzaman chaired the event, which was attended by diplomats, academics, business leaders, and members of civil society.
