Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government is committed to fulfilling the reasonable demands of Bangladesh Police in line with the country’s financial capacity and available resources, aiming to build a modern, efficient and people-oriented law enforcement force.

He made the remarks while addressing the “Prime Minister’s Special Welfare Meeting” organised at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in the capital on Sunday as part of Police Week 2026 celebrations.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the programme as the chief guest, while Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Manzur Morshed Chowdhury and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir also spoke at the event.

The home minister said many police constables complete nearly four decades of service without receiving further promotion. To recognise their contribution, the government is considering introducing a special honorary promotion policy for retiring personnel based on satisfactory service records.

Under the proposed system, constables may receive honorary promotion to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), ASIs to Sub-Inspector (SI), and SIs to Inspector rank at the time of retirement.

Salahuddin Ahmed also said the government is working on a policy to introduce overtime allowances for police members from constable to inspector level who perform duties beyond regular working hours. He expressed hope that the initiative would improve morale and service efficiency within the force.

Highlighting the intense physical and mental pressure faced by police personnel, the home minister announced plans to modernise central and divisional police hospitals with improved healthcare facilities. He added that additional advanced hospitals may also be established after necessary evaluations.

The minister further said the government is taking steps to solve accommodation shortages and improve infrastructure for various police units through land acquisition and financial support.

Referring to the recent improvement in the law-and-order situation, Salahuddin Ahmed said ongoing drives against terrorists, extortionists and drug traffickers will continue.

He also stressed the importance of modern training and technological skills to tackle emerging crimes such as cybercrime, online gambling and money laundering. According to him, a committee has already been formed to recommend legal reforms to address such offences more effectively.
