A public interest writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking compensation for the families of children who died during the recent measles outbreak across Bangladesh.

The petition requests the court to direct the authorities concerned to provide Tk2 crore in compensation to each family of the 352 children who reportedly died from measles and related complications in different parts of the country.

Supreme Court lawyer Humayun Kabir Pallob filed the writ on Sunday with the relevant branch of the High Court, raising concerns over the deaths linked to the outbreak and seeking judicial intervention on humanitarian grounds.

The Health Secretary and several other government officials and authorities connected to the health sector have been named as respondents in the petition.

According to the writ, a large number of children lost their lives amid the spread of measles and measles-like complications nationwide, prompting questions regarding preventive measures, healthcare preparedness, and public health management during the outbreak.

The petition specifically sought compensation for the bereaved families, arguing that the deaths caused immense suffering and financial hardship for many households.

The recent measles outbreak has drawn widespread concern among health experts and the public, with authorities already facing pressure to strengthen immunisation efforts and improve disease surveillance systems across the country.
