Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that effective crime control in Bangladesh depends largely on building strong trust between law enforcement agencies and the public.
Speaking at the Police “Welfare Parade” held at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium on the occasion of Police Week 2026, he stressed that police officers must act in a manner that ensures no innocent person is subjected to harassment and that citizens feel safe approaching them for help.
He said the police administration must function strictly under statutory law and not under any political influence. According to him, the success of the police force lies in becoming a dependable symbol of security for the people, which in turn reflects the success of the government.
Emphasising the relationship between citizens and law enforcement, the Prime Minister said that police stations should be seen as safe and reliable places where people can seek legal assistance without fear or hesitation. He added that humane behaviour from police personnel would significantly improve public confidence in state institutions.
Tarique Rahman described police members as frontline representatives of the government who play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, responding to crises, and ensuring justice. He said that restoring trust between the police and citizens remains one of the biggest challenges for the current administration.
He also highlighted the government’s commitment to modernising the police force through technology, including cyber policing, artificial intelligence, and data-driven crime control systems. Alongside institutional reforms, he mentioned plans to improve welfare measures such as housing, medical facilities, allowances, and training.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, and senior government officials, among others, were present at the programme.
