The appointment process for 14,384 candidates selected as assistant teachers in government primary schools has entered a fresh stage of scrutiny, even as authorities earlier assured that none of the selected applicants would be removed from the list.
The Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) has now directed district primary education officers to initiate police verification for all shortlisted candidates recruited under the Primary Assistant Teacher Recruitment 2025 process.
The instruction was issued through an official letter signed on Sunday by Irin Parveen, assistant director of the recruitment wing under the Policy and Operations Division of the DPE. The directive refers to an earlier instruction from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education issued on 3 May.
According to the letter, authorities have been instructed to conduct background checks through police verification, focusing on the candidates’ past activities as well as the authenticity of their submitted documents and certificates.
District primary education officers across the country - excluding those in the three hill districts - have been asked to take necessary steps to implement the verification process.
The candidates were selected in the final results published on 8 February during the tenure of the interim government. Since then, they have been demanding official appointment letters and posting orders.
Many of them staged demonstrations at Shahbagh in Dhaka and later in front of the DPE office in Mirpur. On 27 April, police reportedly used force to disperse their protest.
Earlier, on 3 May, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon stated that none of the selected candidates would be dropped and assured that appointment letters would be issued soon, although no specific timeline was provided.
With the new verification step, the recruitment process has effectively moved into its final clearance stage.
