The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Wednesday approved nine development projects involving a total estimated cost of Tk36,695.72 crore at its 11th meeting of the current fiscal year.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chaired the meeting held at the Secretariat.
According to a Planning Ministry statement, Tk36,490.93 crore of the total project cost will be financed from government funds, while the remaining Tk204.79 crore will come from the implementing agencies’ own resources.
Among the approved schemes, three are new projects, five are revised projects and one project received an extension without any increase in cost.
The largest approved project was the “Padma Barrage (1st Phase)” under the Ministry of Water Resources, with an estimated cost of Tk34,497.25 crore. The project aims to improve water management, irrigation and river restoration in several regions of the country.
Other approved projects included the upgradation of Mother and Child Welfare Centres in district towns into 30-bed facilities at a cost of Tk1,329.53 crore under the Medical Education and Family Welfare Division.
Under the Ministry of Defence, ECNEC approved a Tk385.13 crore project to construct four SM barrack complexes at Savar Cantonment to address accommodation shortages for soldiers.
The meeting also cleared revised projects involving construction of infrastructure for Hi-Tech City-2, expansion of government children’s homes, development of the Chattogram City Outer Ring Road and installation of a gas pipeline from Dhanua to Mymensingh for supplying gas to the Mymensingh Combined Cycle Power Plant.
Two revised cultural projects were also approved, including the establishment of the Chattogram Muslim Institute Cultural Complex and construction of a multi-storey building for the Department of Public Libraries.
The meeting was attended by ministers, state ministers and senior government officials concerned.
