The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast the possibility of one to two low-pressure systems forming over the Bay of Bengal in the second half of May, one of which could intensify into a depression or even develop into a cyclone.

Meteorologists have also warned that the country may experience a mix of Nor’westers, thunderstorms and heatwaves during the month as seasonal weather patterns become more active.

According to officials at the BMD Storm Warning Centre, scattered light to moderate Nor’westers and thunderstorms are expected over five to eight days in May. In addition, severe Nor’westers may occur for two to three days, with a risk of hailstorms in some regions.

The forecast also indicates that one to three heatwaves may sweep across different parts of the country, with at least one potentially turning severe. During such events, temperatures could rise between 40°C and 41.9°C.

BMD Director (Current Charge) and Chairman of the Long-Range Forecast Committee Md Momenul Islam said overall rainfall in May is expected to remain within normal levels, although isolated areas may experience heavy downpours.

Region-wise rainfall forecasts suggest Sylhet may receive the highest rainfall, followed by Mymensingh, Chattogram, Rangpur and Dhaka divisions. Barishal, Rajshahi and Khulna are expected to receive comparatively lower rainfall.

Meteorologists added that river water levels across major rivers are likely to remain normal in May, but heavy rainfall in the northern, northeastern and southeastern regions could cause temporary rises.

Officials also noted that April saw significantly higher-than-normal rainfall nationwide, driven by active low-pressure systems and easterly winds, along with multiple spells of thunderstorms and hailstorms.

Experts say the combination of heat, humidity and unstable atmospheric conditions in May could lead to rapidly changing weather patterns across the country.
