The government of Bangladesh has initiated steps to establish a separate Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) in Cumilla to improve urban water management and expand civic services in the fast-growing city.

A policy decision in this regard was taken at an inter-ministerial meeting held on Wednesday at the Local Government Division conference room at the Secretariat in Dhaka. The meeting was chaired by Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Officials at the meeting discussed the increasing pressure on urban services in Cumilla due to rapid population growth and expanding urbanisation. Participants stressed the need for a modern and sustainable system to ensure safe drinking water, proper sewerage facilities and improved long-term city management.

Speaking at the meeting, the minister described the proposed Cumilla WASA as a timely and necessary initiative aimed at strengthening civic amenities and ensuring efficient water services for city residents.

He instructed the relevant ministries, departments and agencies to work in coordination and speed up the necessary procedures for establishing the authority.

The minister also emphasised adopting sustainable urban management strategies to guarantee uninterrupted access to safe water and better sanitation services for the people of Cumilla.

Officials concerned believe the proposed authority will help improve planned urban development and strengthen public service delivery in one of the country’s rapidly expanding cities.

Cumilla-6 lawmaker Monirul Haque Chowdhury, Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hasan, Cumilla City Corporation Administrator Yusuf Molla Tipu, and senior officials from different ministries and departments, among others, also attended the meeting.
