A Bangladeshi man was killed after members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly opened fire near the Lalmonirhat border early Thursday, triggering renewed concerns over border killings.
The incident took place around dawn in Amjhol border area under Gothamari Union in Lalmonirhat District.
The deceased was identified as Khademul Islam, son of Amzad Hossain of North Amjhol Village.
According to local residents, Khademul and several others went near border pillar 905/6-S in Bonchoki border area when a patrol team from the Paglamari camp of the Indian 78 BSF Battalion allegedly fired at them. Khademul reportedly sustained bullet injuries to his face, chest and head.
Companions later rescued him in critical condition and transported him to a private clinic in Rangpur. He later died while receiving treatment.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, commanding officer of the 15 BGB Battalion, confirmed that reports had been received regarding the killing of a Bangladeshi national in BSF firing. He said the exact details of the incident were yet to be fully verified.
The BGB officer added that Bangladesh authorities had already lodged a protest with the BSF and requested a flag meeting over the matter.
Earlier, two Bangladeshis were reportedly shot dead at the Brahmanbaria border recently, increasing concern over recurring fatalities along the frontier.
Local residents expressed alarm over the repeated border shootings and urged authorities from both countries to take steps to prevent further loss of life.
