The government of Bangladesh has declared a seven-day nationwide holiday for Eid-ul-Azha, scheduled from 25 to 31 May, according to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Thursday.

The holiday will apply to all government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous and private organisations across the country. To adjust for the extended break, offices will remain open on 23 and 24 May, which fall on Saturday and Sunday.

The notification stated that essential services will remain operational throughout the holiday period. These include electricity, water, gas and fuel supply, fire services, port operations, sanitation, telecommunications, internet services and postal services. Employees and vehicles engaged in these activities will not fall under the holiday restrictions.

Hospitals and emergency medical services will also continue to operate without interruption. Doctors, healthcare staff and vehicles transporting medicines and medical equipment will be exempt from the holiday arrangement to ensure uninterrupted healthcare delivery.

The government further clarified that offices involved in emergency or critical operations may remain open as necessary during the holiday period.

According to the notification, Bangladesh Bank will issue separate guidelines regarding banking operations during the Eid holidays, while the Supreme Court of Bangladesh will determine arrangements for judicial services.

In addition, the Ministry of Labour and Employment will provide instructions for private industrial establishments and factories in line with the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, ensuring proper implementation of holiday rules across the industrial sector.

Authorities said the extended holiday arrangement aims to facilitate smooth Eid celebrations while maintaining uninterrupted delivery of essential public services across the country.
