A new initiative aimed at improving healthcare and rehabilitation services for children with disabilities has been formally launched in Dhaka under the “Shishu Swarga Model” programme.
Dr Zubaida Rahman, the wife of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and vice president of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, inaugurated the programme on Thursday as the chief guest at a function held in the Korail slum area of the capital, under the initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Before the inauguration, she visited several stalls at the venue showcasing educational materials and essential daily-use items designed for children with special needs. The programme focuses on expanding access to healthcare, rehabilitation support and inclusive services for children with disabilities.
Speaking at the event, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare MA Muhit served as the key speaker, while State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Planning Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki and State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin attended as special guests.
Prime Minister’s Adviser for Health Affairs SM Ziauddin Hyder and Ziaur Rahman Foundation Executive Director Professor Dr Farhad Halim Donar also addressed the programme, highlighting the importance of early intervention, inclusive education and community-based rehabilitation services.
Health Ministry Secretary Md Quamruzzaman Chowdhury presided over the function, while senior officials from the Directorate General of Health Services and other agencies were present.
UNICEF’s acting representative in Bangladesh Stanley Gwavuya, RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md Reazul Islam and Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan also attended the event.
Speakers at the programme stressed the need to strengthen healthcare systems and expand rehabilitation facilities so that children with disabilities can receive proper support and become active participants in society.
