Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting focused on addressing traffic congestion in Dhaka City and improving overall traffic management systems through modernisation and coordinated planning.
The meeting was held at the Public Administration conference room of the Cabinet Division at the Bangladesh Secretariat in the evening, according to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Md Suzauddhowla.
This marks the second time the Prime Minister has presided over a dedicated discussion on resolving traffic congestion in the capital, reflecting the government’s continued emphasis on improving urban mobility and easing pressure on Dhaka’s road network.
The meeting brought together senior ministers and key officials responsible for transport and urban governance. Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam was present alongside State Minister Habibur Rashid.
Senior representatives from Dhaka’s city administrations also participated, including Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan. Lawmaker Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas was also in attendance.
Discussions reportedly focused on identifying major causes of traffic congestion in the capital, improving coordination among transport-related agencies, and exploring long-term structural solutions for a more efficient traffic management system.
Emphasis was placed on modernising traffic control mechanisms, strengthening institutional coordination, and introducing updated systems to better manage the rapidly increasing pressure on Dhaka’s transport infrastructure.
Officials indicated that the meeting is part of an ongoing process to develop sustainable solutions to one of the capital’s most persistent urban challenges, with further follow-up actions expected in subsequent meetings chaired by the Prime Minister.
