Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced that Cumilla will be declared a new administrative division, responding to long-standing demands raised by local leaders and party activists during a roadside rally in Barura Upazila on Saturday.

He made the announcement while addressing a gathering at Lakshmipur Bazar ground in Cumilla as part of his day-long visit to Chandpur. The rally began around 1:30 pm, shortly after he arrived at the venue at approximately 1:20 pm, where he was welcomed by loud cheers and applause from BNP supporters.

During the speech, Tarique Rahman said the proposal would be implemented if it genuinely reflected the aspirations of the people. “If this demand truly reflects the aspiration of people, Insha Allah, it will be implemented. The BNP government will gradually fulfil the demands of the people,” he said.

He also indicated that steps would be taken to establish an agricultural university in Cumilla following discussions with the education ministry in the coming days. The proposal was formally raised at the rally by Agriculture Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid Yasin on behalf of local residents, drawing strong support from party activists.

In addition, Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon called for upgrading Cumilla District Hospital from 150 beds to between 250 and 300 beds, alongside the proposed administrative upgrade.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came amid sustained slogans from party leaders and supporters urging the creation of a Cumilla division. He urged the public to remain supportive of the government, saying its strength lies in the people.

The rally formed part of his broader tour to Chandpur, where he is scheduled to attend a series of programmes later in the day.
