Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Sunday said the government is considering the formation of an independent Media Commission aimed at promoting freedom of expression, strengthening accountability and ensuring a healthier media environment in Bangladesh.

The minister made the remarks at the Secretariat after holding a courtesy meeting with leaders of the newly formed Editors Council, an organisation representing television editors.

According to Zahir Uddin Swapon, the proposed commission would work independently and consultations with journalists, media owners and other stakeholders would begin soon before taking the initiative forward.

He said the government wants to create a professional and responsible media environment where journalists can work freely while maintaining ethical standards and accountability.

During the meeting, representatives of the Editors Council expressed concern over what they described as the lack of effective measures in the past to protect the interests of the media industry. They also stressed the need for stronger professional security and institutional protection for journalists working in the country’s media sector.

The information minister, however, noted that some media outlets had been used by certain individuals to avoid state taxes, saying such practices ultimately harm the credibility and development of the industry.

He added that although not everyone in the sector is involved in such activities, greater transparency and accountability remain necessary.

Leaders of the Editors Council said 24 leading television channels have already joined the platform and more organisations are expected to become members gradually. They said the council aims to encourage responsible journalism and promote accountability within the profession.
