The Supreme Court has cleared the way for the release of former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy after upholding High Court orders that granted her ad-interim bail in two murder cases linked to the July Uprising.
The Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Rezaul Haque passed “no order” on two separate petitions filed by the state seeking a stay on the High Court’s 30 April bail orders. As a result, the earlier High Court decisions remain in effect.
According to Ivy’s lawyers, this means there is currently no legal obstacle to her release from jail. They also noted that the Appellate Division had recently upheld her bail in 10 other related cases, strengthening her legal position across multiple proceedings.
On 30 April, the High Court granted Ivy ad-interim bail in the two cases and issued separate rules asking the authorities to explain why the bail should not be made permanent. The cases were filed with Siddhirganj Police Station in Narayanganj over the killing of Selim Mondal and Abdus Salam during the 2024 July Uprising.
Earlier, Ivy was shown arrested in these cases after the High Court had already granted her bail in five other cases on 26 February this year. She was initially arrested on 9 May last year in connection with the killing of RMG worker Minarul and was later shown arrested in nine additional cases.
The High Court had previously granted her bail in all 10 cases in separate orders delivered on 9 November last year and 26 February this year.
Lawyers representing Ivy, including senior counsel Md Motaher Hossain Sazu and others, appeared during the hearing, while the state was represented by Deputy Attorney General Syeda Shajia Sharmin.
