A court in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday sentenced four individuals to death for their involvement in the murder of Bangladesh Army officer Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon, who was killed in Chakaria’s Dulahazara area last year.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Mohammad Abul Monsur Siddiqui of the Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court.
In addition to the death sentences, the court awarded life imprisonment to five other accused persons, while four more were sentenced to 10 years in jail. Five accused were acquitted after the court found insufficient evidence against them.
Out of the total 18 accused in the case, 12 were present in the courtroom when the judgment was announced.
According to case details, Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar was killed on 24 September 2024 in the East Maizpara area under Dulahazara union in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar. He was stabbed by assailants during the incident.
The killing of the young army officer had triggered widespread public outrage across the country at the time, drawing strong reactions and calls for justice.
Authorities said the case was closely followed due to its sensitive nature and the victim’s service in the armed forces. The latest verdict brings a major development in the long-running legal process surrounding the high-profile murder case.
