Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of the National Disaster Management Research and Training Institute (NDMRTI) at Sataish Chourasta of Dharpara area in Gazipur City.
The foundation stone was laid in the afternoon at around 2pm, marking the official start of the construction work of the proposed institute.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister M Iqbal Hossain, Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Md Saidur Rahman Khan and other senior government officials were present at the ceremony.
Following the inauguration, the Prime Minister participated in symbolic environmental and conservation activities on the institute premises. He released fish fry into a nearby pond and planted a sapling as part of the programme.
According to project authorities, the institute will be built on nearly eight acres of land in the Dharpara area of Sataish Chourasta. The development plan includes an administrative building as well as residential facilities for trainees.
Officials said the proposed institute is designed to strengthen national capacity in disaster preparedness, response, research and training. It is expected to become a key centre for advanced disaster management studies and professional development.
Authorities also expressed hope that the institute will contribute to improving coordination among relevant agencies and enhancing the country’s resilience to natural and climate-induced disasters.
Once completed, the National Disaster Management Research and Training Institute is expected to serve as one of the leading centres of excellence in disaster management in South Asia and beyond, according to project planners.
