Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that laws and government initiatives alone are not enough to prevent rape, child abuse and killings in Bangladesh, calling instead for a strong national social movement.

He made the remarks in a post published on his personal Facebook profile on Thursday morning.

Fakhrul said families, schools, madrasahs, teachers, religious leaders, media organisations, social groups and citizens all have a role to play in addressing the problem. He stressed the need for collective responsibility across society.

He wrote that children must be taught respect, humanity, responsibility and the dignity of women. Ensuring their safety, he added, meant securing the future of Bangladesh.

The BNP leader said incidents of rape, child abuse and killings were not isolated cases. He described them as alarming reflections of long-standing moral decline, social irresponsibility and a gradual erosion of human values over time.

He added that his party remained committed to continued efforts against such crimes and to building a safer country where children could grow up without fear.

Fakhrul also urged people to come together in what he described as a collective struggle for change.
