Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday said the government is making efforts to bring former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh through legal and diplomatic procedures so she can face the cases filed against her in Bangladesh.
Speaking at a press briefing on the law-and-order situation at the Secretariat in Dhaka, the minister said the government has already initiated the formal process through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the existing extradition treaty framework.
“We want Sheikh Hasina back through legal procedure,” Salahuddin said, adding that an official request has been sent through diplomatic channels seeking her return for legal proceedings in Bangladesh.
The home minister stressed that the government remains committed to handling the matter through institutional and lawful means rather than political measures. He said the administration is focused on ensuring justice while maintaining overall law and order in the country.
Replying to questions from journalists regarding India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Salahuddin described the issues as internal matters of India.
He said Bangladesh would not comment on the legal or administrative decisions of another country regarding its own citizens.
However, the minister noted that Border Guard Bangladesh has been instructed to remain vigilant along the frontier to prevent any illegal infiltration or push-ins.
According to him, border security forces are on alert to tackle any unexpected situation that may arise along the Bangladesh-India border.
