No lawyer of the Dhaka Bar Association will stand for the accused in the case filed over the rape and murder of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter in the Pallabi area in Dhaka.
The executive committee of the Dhaka Bar Association unanimously made the decision at a virtual meeting on Friday.
“We have unanimously decided at today’s executive committee meeting that no lawyer of the Dhaka Bar will fight the case on behalf of the accused in the Ramisa murder case,” Dhaka Bar Association General Secretary Kalam Khan said.
According to the case statement, Ramisa Akter, a class-II student of Popular Model High School, was allegedly raped and murdered at a house adjacent to Millat Camp under Pallabi Police Station on 19 May.
Following the incident, Ramisa’s father Abdul Hannan Molla filed a case with Pallabi Police Station on 20 May, accusing Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter.
Police later arrested the two accused.
On 20 May, the prime accused Sohel Rana gave a confessional statement before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junayed.
On the same day, the court ordered that Sohel’s wife, Swapna Akter, 26, be sent to jail.
