State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has announced plans to build a new bridge in Jessore city to reduce traffic congestion and tackle waterlogging.
The minister made the announcement on Friday while inaugurating road, drainage and streetlight installation projects worth nearly Tk 110 million in Wards 6 and 9 of Jessore Municipality.
He said the proposed bridge would connect Hazrat Garib Shah’s Mazar with Ghop Nawapara Road. The existing Kathherpul Bridge would also be widened as part of efforts to improve traffic movement in the city.
“Alongside developing Jessore into a safe city free from drugs, terrorism and extortion, a new bridge would be constructed from Hazrat Garib Shah’s Mazar to Ghop Nawapara Road, while the existing Kathherpul Bridge would be widened to achieve the goal,” he said.
Anindya Islam said he felt a strong sense of responsibility towards the people who elected him and added that development work was being accelerated to improve daily movement for municipal residents.
He also said authorities were working in coordination to reduce public suffering caused by waterlogging in the city by at least 50% before the next monsoon season.
The minister urged residents to build a social movement against drugs and terrorism.
Jessore Municipality Administrator Rafiqul Hasan chaired the inauguration ceremony.
Among those present were District BNP President and Public Prosecutor Advocate Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, District BNP General Secretary and District Council Administrator Delwar Hossain Khokon, and Jessore Municipality Assistant Engineer Mokhlesur Rahman.
