Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee on Friday announced that construction of a permanent embankment along vulnerable sections of the Jamuna River will begin from the next fiscal year to curb recurring riverbank erosion.

The minister made the announcement while visiting erosion-affected areas in Charpauli under Kakua Union of Tangail Sadar Upazila, where he also addressed a public gathering attended by local residents and government officials.

He said the planned embankment project is intended to provide long-term protection for thousands of people living along the riverbanks who suffer repeated losses of homes, farmland and infrastructure due to erosion every year.

According to the minister, the government has undertaken a project worth around Tk50 crore to build a permanent embankment in the most erosion-prone areas of Tangail District.

“The project is expected to start in the upcoming fiscal year,” he said, adding that the government remains committed to implementing its election pledges and improving protection for vulnerable communities.

Anee said his field visit aimed to assess the severity of erosion directly and ensure that effective measures are taken to address the problem permanently.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku also attended the programme and said the government is determined to fulfil its commitment to construct a permanent embankment along the Jamuna River.

He added that alongside river protection efforts, the government would also undertake road construction and other development projects to improve living standards in the affected areas.

Among others present during the inspection were Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar, Bangladesh Water Development Board Central Region Chief Engineer Md Shahjahan Siraj, local political leaders and residents from erosion-hit communities.
