Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman on Saturday said the formal trial proceedings in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter are expected to begin immediately after the Eid holidays, as authorities move to fast-track the high-profile case.
Speaking to reporters, the Law Minister said investigators are now waiting for the DNA test report, which is expected within the next 72 hours. Once the report is received, police are likely to submit the chargesheet before the Eid-ul-Azha break.
According to the minister, the DNA findings are essential for ensuring a legally strong and unquestionable prosecution process.
“The police are ready to file the chargesheet as soon as the DNA report arrives,” he said, adding that the government remains determined to ensure swift justice for the child victim.
Ramisa, a second-grade student from Dhaka’s Pallabi area, went missing last Tuesday before her body was later recovered from a neighbouring flat. The case sparked widespread outrage across the country and triggered protests demanding capital punishment for the accused.
The prime suspect, Sohel Rana, has already given a confessional statement before the court admitting involvement in the crime, investigators said.
During his remarks, the law minister also addressed public concerns regarding delays in the execution of death penalty cases. He explained that one of the major causes of delays in High Court confirmation proceedings is the preparation of “Paper Books,” which contain detailed records and documentation of each case.
He said the government is currently working on reforms to simplify and speed up the process so that verdicts in serious criminal cases can be implemented more quickly.
The government has repeatedly assured the public that the Ramisa murder case will be handled with the highest priority and that all legal steps will be taken to ensure proper punishment for those responsible.
